What is coaching? A metaphor of survival.
There are many similarities between the principles of coaching and the principles of survival.
If lost in the wilderness, one of the first things that a survivalist will tell you is to get your bearings. All you can see is a mountain in front of you and dense forest all around. Looking at the mountain, it is obvious that climbing up to the top is not going to be easy and it is going to take a lot of valuable energy. However, without the vantage point of the top of the mountain, you could walk for days...lost in the trees with no clear destination.
Why? Because you can't see out of the trees...or beyond the mountain...to see what lies beyond.
By climbing up the mountain, you are able to see what is on the other side and what options exist. You can see more clearly in all directions. From the mountaintop you can make informed decisions. It may become apparent that traveling in certain a direction that initially looks easy will ultimately result in a dead-end. From the top of the mountain you are able to see the best way out of your situation, whatever it might be.
Working with a coach is similar to climbing to the top of the mountain for a vantage point. By exploring all possible options, some which you may have never considered or even thought possible, a coach allows you to choose the direction that will work best for you. A coach then works to assist and support you along the path that you have chosen, as well as overcome the challenges that you may face along the way.
You pick the path. You are the leader. You make the decisions. It's your journey.
A coach helps you to accept things as they are without judgment, believe that you can create a new reality, and achieve beyond your goals to live the life that you imagined. Learn more…
